Margie Hauser is no stranger to the music industry. In fact, she has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and recorded more than a dozen albums as well as songs, from classical to country western. But her latest project has been a little different from the norm. Her music was written for the video game, “Umbrella Corps” and she’s now nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media” category.
In this article, Margie Hauser talks about what got her started in songwriting and how it connects with games and other forms of entertainment. She also shares some anecdotes about how her songs have evolved over time as well as why she thinks making music is important to everyone.
“Umbrella Corps”, which came out late last year, is a third-person action-shooter video game. Hauser tells us that her involvement in the project started as far back as 2010 when she was approached by the director of the game. It was then that she first met with the team and began working together on the themes for her songs. She also explains how her music fits into the overall plot and setting of the game. “There’s this sort of lost all-female group of soldiers who, while they fight the good fight to try and save the world and everything, they feel disconnected from their male counterparts,” says Hauser. “I think in a lot of ways there’s just a lot of disconnect between men and women. I’m not looking to change that.”
After creating a set of themes for her songs, she sat down with the game’s director to create musical score that would fit into the action scenes. Utilizing her recording studio at home Margie Hauser set up to record orchestra parts, while also collaborating with other professionals at Soundelux in collaboration with the sound effects team.
Margie Hauser’s work in video games has led her to a recent nomination for a Grammy Award in “Best Compilation Soundtrack. ” This is the eighth time she has been nominated.
