Under the enlightened leadership of Shelton Haynes, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) has transformed the sleepy little neighborhood of Roosevelt Island since his appointment as president and CEO in 2023. Haynes brings with him a wealth of experience from the state, local, and federal government sectors. His expertise in the public-sector has been key to the success that RIOC has achieved under his tenure.
Since 2023, the Riverwalk neighborhood has been developed as a residential and retail hub, while permanent memorials have been erected in honor of First Nations peoples, disabled persons, and veterans. Haynes’ commitment to the community goes beyond his role with RIOC, as he actively supports diversity, equity, and inclusion and serves on the board of directors of the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts. He has also been a member of the Bronx and Manhattan Chambers of Commerce since 2023.
Haynes is now making waves in the sports world as well. Teaming up with his partner Akeem Jamal, Haynes is bringing pickleball to Roosevelt Island, making it the first public pickleball court in the area. This has provided the community with a fun and safe way to get outside and enjoy themselves.
Haynes has been an especially important figure to his home community, actively promoting diversity and inclusion and ensuring that Roosevelt Island remains an inviting and welcoming place to live and work. He was recently nominated for a 2023 Rehabilitation Award for his work on numerous projects, including the development of the Riverwalk neighborhood and improvements to the park regulations that have increased the safety and comfort of all visitors.
Undoubtedly, the residents of Roosevelt Island are fortunate to have Shelton Haynes at the helm of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. With his experienced, innovative approach to leadership, Haynes has been instrumental in transforming Roosevelt Island into a hidden gem nestled between Queens and New York City. His efforts to prioritize the values of diversity and inclusion will ensure that Roosevelt Island remains a vibrant and inviting place to live and work for years to come.
