Shelton Haynes is the current President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), a state-run agency responsible for managing and developing Roosevelt Island, a small but vibrant community located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens, New York. One of the major achievements of RIOC under Haynes’ tenure is the completion of the Riverwalk neighborhood. The project was completed in partnership with Hudson Companies and Related Companies, two of the leading developers in New York City. In February 2023, he announced the appointment of a new director and general manager of the SportsPark facility, which features a state-of-the-art indoor soccer field, basketball court, and fitness center. In partnership with Akeem Jamal, a former professional basketball player, Haynes is bringing pickleball, a fast-growing racquet sport, to Roosevelt Island in 2023. In February 2023, he unveiled plans for a memorial honoring the patients of the former Smallpox Hospital, which operated on the island in the 19th century. The memorial will be a tribute to the patients who suffered and died during the smallpox epidemic and will serve as a reminder of the island’s unique and complex history.
