Humble and Blunt: Kelcy Warren’s Houston Interview

Two very different sides of Kelcy Warren appeared during a few minutes on camera at Hart Energy’s Hall of Fame event. One was gracious and self-effacing. The other was direct to the point of bluntness.

Warren, executive chairman of Energy Transfer, spoke with Hart Energy’s Jordan Soto at the A.D. Players Theater in Houston, where the publication celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Gracious Honoree

His opening remarks were full of gratitude. Warren described the recognition as a big honor and said it caught him completely off guard. “I didn’t see this coming at all, and so I’m thrilled to be here,” he said.

He seemed genuinely struck by the company he was keeping. Looking over the list of fellow honorees, he said he could hardly believe he belonged in that group and called the experience “pretty amazing.” When Soto asked him to highlight a standout among them, Kelcy Warren declined to rank anyone. He said every honoree had made a real impact, that he knew all of them, and that the organizers had chosen well.

The Outspoken Executive

The tone changed with the final question. Soto asked what advice he had for young people and Hart Energy readers, and Warren answered without hedging.

“I would say don’t believe any of this nonsense that we’re transitioning out of energy,” he said. “We’re not. That can’t happen, it’s impossible, but we are never going to run from the rhetoric.”

He then addressed younger listeners directly, urging them not to accept transition arguments and telling them they were too smart to do so.

The contrast reveals something about how Kelcy Warren approaches public life. He is comfortable deflecting praise toward others, yet he holds firm views about the future of oil and gas and states them plainly. Leaders of large pipeline companies often speak in measured corporate language. Warren chose simple words and a clear position instead.

The interview ended cordially. Soto thanked him, and Warren said it had been a pleasure before moving on to the evening’s fireside chat. See related link for additional information.
