That push began in 2014 with the purchase of Susser Holdings and continued quickly with Regency Energy Partners, signaling that the company was once again ready to grow through dealmaking rather than construction alone.
Building Scale Across the Midstream Sector
The buying continued with PennTex Midstream Partners, USA Compression Partners and SemGroup, each addition expanding the range of services and geography Energy Transfer could offer its customers. Under Kelcy Warren, those deals reflected a consistent approach of adding capacity and infrastructure whenever assets that fit the company’s footprint became available, rather than waiting for a single perfect target.
More recently, Energy Transfer has kept up that pace, acquiring Enable Midstream and Lotus Midstream before closing its most recent large purchase, Crestwood Equity Partners, for $7.1 billion. The Crestwood deal strengthened the company’s position in the Permian Basin and Bakken Shale, two of the most active oil producing regions in the country, while also pushing Energy Transfer into the Powder River Basin for the first time.

Warren has been open about how much of this growth came from reacting to opportunity rather than long range planning. “I’d like to tell you that we saw everything in advance and we’re smarter than everybody else, but that’s just not true,” he said. “We’ve been very reactive here, but I think our reactions have been pretty good.”
