- Early Life
Richard Liu was born in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province. His father was a professor of civil engineering at Zhejiang University, and his mother was a professor of English at Hangzhou Teachers University. Richard grew up in a middle-class family. He studied electronics and computer science at Hangzhou Normal University with his degree in 1994.
- Career
After working for Dell and SAP, Richard found a job as a system engineer for Goldman Sachs in the United States. Soon his career blossomed as he joined a start-up company in the IT field named Beijing eTouch. He worked there from 1998 to 1999 until it was sold to the Chinese search engine Baidu. Liu became head of corporate strategy and later president at Baidu (“Bidu”) until 2007, when he quit launching his own company, JD.com.
Liu Qiangdong is an icon of Chinese entrepreneurship, often called “the Steve Jobs of China.” His life story has been chronicled in several biographies, including One Billion Customers: The Story Behind Alibaba’s Success by Fred Liao and Yang Mu.

JD is the largest direct sales retailer and shopping mall in China, with a wide range of categories, including electronics, apparel, home furnishing, fashion accessories, and automobiles. The company has established multiple fulfillment centers nationwide to support its e-commerce business.
JD became one of the most prominent players in China’s e-commerce world. JD’s revenue rose 384% in the first quarter of 2013 compared with a year earlier, with costs also increasing as it works to improve its infrastructure.
