Roosevelt Island is New York’s hidden gem that provides people with a place to get away from the busy and noisy city life. Though there are several ways to get to the location, most people still complain of inadequate access to this precious piece of land. However, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation is working overtime to ensure that they improve this gem and make it a destination for many.
Shelton Haynes took up the position of RIOC’s president and CEO in 2021 and has been focusing on bringing out the uniqueness of Roosevelt Island. His leadership began when the Covid-19 pandemic hit New York City, and he had to pause all his long-term plans to establish a testing site. However, as the world is returning to the new normal, Haynes can now focus on his pending projects.
One of his team’s current assignments is completing the final phase of a project that began in 1969. This will happen through the completion of the Riverwalk Building 9. This construction is the last step of the master plan directed by Related Companies and Hudson Companies. The $185 million construction deal involves constructing a mixed-use building containing office spaces, workforce housing, and rental units. Its completion will be a significant success for Shelton Haynes and his entire team.
Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation is focusing on this project since it will create more job opportunities, increase housing, and attract investors. As a way to show concern for the dogs on the island, Haynes and his team created a temporary dog park that residents can use while construction is ongoing. Haynes expects this project to get completed by fall 2024 so that they can transfer RIOC headquarters to the building.
Besides the Riverwalk construction, Haynes is also working to increase RIOC’s capital program. From the time he assumed office, the funds increased from $4.5 million to over $19.6 million. The money is useful in various renovations around the island and funding various projects. As part of accomplishing his development goals, Shelton Haynes motivates residents and tourists to visit and promote local businesses. He anticipates significant business growth in the next few years through promoting tourism.
