Shelton Haynes

Mr Haynes graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and soon after began his government job with the NYC Department of Residential Development and Preservation. Before joining RIOC, Mr Haynes was the Chief Operating Officer of the Housing Department of DeKalb County in Georgia.

He supervised all agency functions, operations and strategic initiatives, and the senior management team. Mr Haynes is engaged in programs and initiatives that directly impact the Roosevelt Island neighbourhood, aiming to make Roosevelt Island among the safest in New York City.

Shelton Haynes has been the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation’s president and chief executive officer since March 2021. He collaborates with the RIOC Executive Committee to ensure the Corporation’s goals and objectives are met, permitting the Council to function successfully as a ruling body.

Roosevelt Island has resurfaced as a hidden gem buried in the gloom of the Big Apple under the guidance of Shelton Haynes.

Mr Haynes has overseen numerous Roosevelt Island improvements, including the renovation of the Blackwell House, the restoration of the Southpoint Park Shoreline, the replacement of the Seawall Railing, the renovation of the Roosevelt Island Youth Center, the renovation of the Sportspark Complex, the dedication of the FDR Hope Memorial, the completion of the Tram Elevator Project, and the securing of financing for the Riverwalk Housing 9 project, to name a few.

The historic Renwick Ruin in New York City resembles a collapsing tower from medieval England, with ivy covering its Gothic Revival casing and large holes penetrating its walls.

The derelict smallpox hospital, built in 1854 on Roosevelt Island, is a strange landmark that may serve as a totem for its peculiar setting. On the island, 1950s brutalist architecture rubs against modern art, and the old ruin does the same.

The State of New York established the Roosevelt Island Operating Company (RIOC) in 1984 as a good social corporation with the aim of planning, designing, developing, operating, and maintaining Roosevelt Island.

Roosevelt Island operating company is dedicated to delivering services that improve the island’s dwelling unit by focusing on innovative and ecologically responsible solutions.

The 2-mile-long island’s roads, buildings, parks, public transit, and sports facility, including the famed aerial tramway, are all managed by RIOC. In addition, RIOC has a Public Security Department that works to keep citizens, workers, entrepreneurs, and tourists safe and secure.
